What are Peace Clubs and how do they protect girls and boys?

In San Pedro Sula, Honduras, recruitment into gangs is a major problem for girls and boys growing up in the city. Peace Clubs are making a difference.

Peace Clubs are one way to protect children living in San Pedro Sula.

San Pedro Sula, Honduras, is one of the most dangerous places for girls and boys to live. Gang violence is extremely prevalent; 44per cent of the population lives in poverty and it has the most murders per capita in the world. This kind of environment is not meant for children, and yet many girls and boys are growing up in the centre.

Peace Clubs are a safe environment for girls and boys to go to learn, play and receive emotional and social support. Girls and boys come to the clubs and can play and learn free from the challenges and violence that they have grown up in. These clubs are opportunities for children to build a future away from gangs.

In the summer of 2023, 450 children from Raw Hope Peace clubs across the city came together for a Peace Club Fun Day where they enjoyed a splash pad, games and activities. Children attending Peace Clubs gain confidence in themselves and are encouraged to stay in school and build a future for themselves.
